What Happens When a Business Energy Contract Expires?

When a business energy contract reaches its end date without a new arrangement in place, the supply does not normally stop. Instead, the account may move to out-of-contract, deemed or default terms depending on the circumstances.

Those terms can differ significantly from the previous contract, which is why renewal tracking matters.

Before expiry

Confirm the contract end date, check any notice requirements, review recent bills and make sure the decision-maker has enough time to assess options.

If the contract has already expired

Establish what tariff or terms are currently being applied, then review the available alternatives. Do not assume the existing supplier's default position is the only option.

A simple contract register can prevent avoidable surprises, particularly for multi-site organisations.
